Outward Bound courses are meant to be extremely challenging, both for youth and adults, but I didn’t understand how challenging until I completed one.
Outward Bound Veterans expeditions build on camaraderie and the challenge of the natural world as a pathway to healing. These expeditions encourage participants to connect with existing strengths and bond with fellow veterans in a safe, positive, mission-driven environment.
Questions like “how was it?” often lead to answers such as: “fine,” “cold,” or “I will NEVER do anything like that again!” We hope that a few of the following questions can help guide a conversation with your child about their Outward Bound expedition.
Holistic education takes the effort of a collaborative community… because there is truth to the old adage that it takes a village to raise a child. Outward Bound was proud to be a part of that collaborative community at Learning to Lead.
When you’re out on course, it’s not like you can just go home at night and throw your clothes in the dryer or grab a clean set. In the backcountry you’ve got what you got and you have to make it work. I think that’s what makes some people fall in love with spending time outside: When convenience is removed, you have to get inventive and resilient.
The Wetherbee Scholarship is a yearly gift given by the Wetherbee family to Outward Bound. It is in honor of 1st Marine Alexander Wetherbee who was killed in Iraq in 2004. He was an outdoorsman, so the family thought this scholarship was a beautiful way to honor his memory. We agree.
