The cornerstone of the Outward Bound educational philosophy is that challenges can only be met with sufficient support. When Baltimore Chesapeake Bay Outward Bound School was chartered In 1986, our founders were committed to the idea that every student should be able to experience Outward Bound. This commitment stays with us today, and we’re proud to say that in 2016 we will award over $500,000 to thousands of students in the form of financial aid and scholarships to participate; many of whom would not be able to participate without our support.
Scholarships for Individuals
Every summer we run three fully-funded scholarship courses: Get Out And Lead for students entering grades 7-9, and Youth Leadership Corps for students entering grades 10-12. Admission to these courses is highly selective and includes an application, essay, recommendations, and an interview. Open to residents of Maryland, DC, Virginia, and West Virginia. See the links for more information.
Scholarships for Veterans
In accordance with Outward Bound USA’s commitment to serve veterans, we also offer fully-funded scholarship courses for Veterans. All tuition and travel expenses are covered and any active duty service member or veteran is eligible.
Alex Wetherbee Memorial Scholarship Fund
This scholarship recognizes the life and service of First Lieutenant Alex Wetherbee, United States Marine Corps. Alex was a member of the 3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion (Camp Pendleton) when he gave his life in service to his country near Fallujah in Iraq. He was actively involved with Outward Bound as an instructor and was an inspiration to others through his volunteer service and constant pursuit of new challenges. Through the generosity of many donors, Harry and Doris Wetherbee, Alex’s parents, established this scholarship fund to provide tuition assistance to the survivors of military service members killed in action who would like to attend an Outward Bound course.
Financial Aid for Maryland Public Schools
The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) supports our mission to bring students into the wilderness to learn essential leadership skills that round out their educational experience. As such, we are able to significantly subsidize the tuition for Maryland public schools to bring their students for a meaningful, character building expedition and utilize our MDCCRS-approved Character Curriculum.
Financial Aid for Individuals
We award partial tuition, need-based financial aid awards to students attending our summer Classic Expeditions. These 8-to 14-day courses, a rite of passage for many, are unique experiences for youth to overcome challenges, develop leadership skills, experience the outdoors in a way that will have lasting impact on their lives. We are honored to make the dream of an Outward Bound course a reality for worthy youth each summer.
